Purpose of the Room: This loft is housed in what originally was a detached building probably located elsewhere on the property and the construction appears to pre-date the 1812 House that it was eventually attached to. A narrow, steep staircase leads from the Summer Kitchen to a small landing and an open loft area that tradition states was used as slave quarters. A more in-depth of review of slaves on Long Island can be found in the INDEX OF HELME FAMILY SLAVES link.
Architectural Features: The ceiling in this loft area retains the cedar roofing shakes and hand hewn beams and rafters. Additionally many of the boards still retain their original tree bark.
Color: Natural wood
